Take a family of five from Sydney stepping out of Jaipur airport late in the afternoon: two parents, a grandmother and two teenagers, with four large suitcases and a pile of backpacks. A sedan is clearly not going to work, and a 12-seat van feels like too much. Waiting at the kerb is a white Toyota Innova Crysta, the driver already loading cases into the back, and within ten minutes everyone is seated with room to stretch. That scene plays out hundreds of times a day across India, and it explains why the Toyota Innova Crysta with driver has become the default family vehicle for private tours in the country.
The Crysta comes in two seating layouts. The 7-seater Innova Crysta, sold as 6+1, has two captain seats in the middle row with a walkway between them, and a third row bench for two. The 8-seater version, sold as 7+1, has a three-person bench in the middle. For tourism, the 6+1 captain seat layout is far more comfortable, because each middle-row passenger gets their own armrests and the third row is easy to reach. Our Innova Crysta fleet is set up for six guests plus the driver, and we recommend no more than five adults with full luggage for long tours.
Innova Crysta luggage capacity depends on how many seats are in use. With all three rows occupied, the boot behind the third row holds about two medium suitcases and a few soft bags. Fold one half of the third row and you can fit four large suitcases with space for cabin bags, while still seating five people. This is why many operators fit a roof carrier on the Innova for larger groups: with a covered carrier, six guests and six large cases travel without anyone sharing seat space with luggage. Always confirm whether the carrier comes with a waterproof cover, especially during the monsoon months.
On long drives, the Crysta's real strength shows. The 2.4-litre diesel engine is strong and unhurried at highway speeds, the body-on-frame build absorbs potholes and speed breakers well, and the high seating position gives everyone a good view. Rear air-conditioning vents reach the second and third rows, which matters in Rajasthan where afternoon temperatures can pass 40 degrees from April to June. The ground clearance of about 178 mm handles village roads, rough fort approaches and hill routes without scraping.
There are a few limits worth knowing. The third row is fine for teenagers or shorter adults on two-hour drives, but tall adults will find it cramped on a 6-hour highway day. The Crysta is also a large vehicle for old city lanes in places like Jaipur's walled city, Udaipur near the City Palace and Varanasi's riverside area, where your driver may stop at a wider point and walk you in. These are small trade-offs for a vehicle that carries families, small groups and their luggage comfortably across thousands of kilometres.
Innova Crysta rental rates in India follow a standard structure across most operators, although the exact numbers vary by city and season. We quote here on the higher side of the realistic range, so your actual quote is more likely to come in below these figures. For outstation trips, you pay a per-km rate for every kilometre from the car's base and back, with a daily minimum, plus driver allowance, tolls, state permits and parking. For city use, you pay a package rate for a set number of hours and kilometres.
The Innova Crysta per-km outstation rate is generally INR 20 to 24 per km (about USD 0.24 to 0.29) in Rajasthan and North India, with Delhi and Mumbai sometimes a little higher. The minimum kilometres per day is usually 250 to 300 km, which means a day where you only drive 120 km within Jaipur is still charged at the minimum. On a multi-day tour, the total kilometre charge is calculated as either the actual distance driven or the number of days multiplied by the daily minimum, whichever is higher. For a 10-day tour at a 250 km minimum, you would pay for at least 2,500 km.
Driver allowance for the Innova Crysta is typically INR 400 to 600 per night when the driver stays away from his base. This covers his meals and lodging, and most hotels in Rajasthan provide basic driver accommodation, although some luxury properties do not. If your hotel charges for driver rooms, that cost is normally added. Night charges of INR 300 to 500 apply when the car is used after 10:00 PM or before 6:00 AM, for example on a late airport pickup or an early sunrise drive to the Taj Mahal.
Tolls and state permits are the other costs to factor in. Highway tolls for an SUV on a typical Golden Triangle circuit total around INR 2,500 to 3,500. When a vehicle registered in one state enters another, it needs a tourist permit. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana each charge their own permit fees, and for a Crysta these usually range from INR 500 to 2,500 per state depending on the number of days and seats. A car based in Jaipur running a Delhi, Agra and Jaipur tour will typically need permits for Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. Parking at monuments and airports is small, usually INR 50 to 300 per stop.
For Innova Crysta city hire, the standard package is 8 hours and 80 km. In Jaipur, Agra and Udaipur, budget about INR 3,500 to 4,500 (about USD 42 to 54) for this package, and in Delhi or Mumbai INR 4,000 to 5,000 (about USD 48 to 60). Extra hours are usually INR 300 to 400 each, and extra kilometres INR 20 to 24. A shorter 4-hour, 40-km package costs about INR 2,200 to 2,800 and suits half-day city visits or simple transfers. Airport transfers within a city are usually priced as a flat fare of INR 1,500 to 2,800 depending on distance and time of day.
Choosing the right vehicle often comes down to group size, luggage and budget, and comparing the Innova Crysta vs Hycross is the first decision for most families. The Innova Hycross is the newer model, built on a monocoque platform with front-wheel drive and a petrol-hybrid engine. It is quieter, smoother at low speeds, and its middle-row captain seats are more spacious, with some versions offering ottoman leg rests. On smooth highways and in city traffic it feels more refined. The Crysta, by contrast, is a rugged diesel with rear-wheel drive and a body-on-frame chassis, so it handles rough village roads, deep potholes and hill routes with less effort. Hycross hire usually costs about 10 to 15 percent more than the Crysta, roughly INR 24 to 28 per km outstation.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is the budget alternative. It is often advertised as a 7-seater, but in reality it carries four adults with luggage, or five at a squeeze for short drives. The third row is tight, the boot space behind it is very small, and the engine works harder on highway climbs. Ertiga rates are lower, about INR 14 to 17 per km outstation, so it can make sense for a family of four with light luggage on a short trip. For long tours with large international suitcases, most travellers find the extra cost of the Crysta well worth it.
At the other end is the Tempo Traveller for groups. This van comes in 9, 12, 15 and 18-seat versions with pushback seats, high roofs and large luggage areas. Once your group passes six or seven adults, the Tempo Traveller is the practical choice, at about INR 30 to 38 per km outstation for a 12-seater, with the same 250 to 300 km daily minimum. For larger groups wanting a more comfortable van, the Force Urbania is a premium option with better suspension and seats for 10 to 15 guests, at INR 40 to 50 per km.
A practical way to decide is to count adults and large suitcases. Up to three adults with three large cases fit easily into a sedan such as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Four to five adults with four or five large cases suit the Crysta or Hycross perfectly. Six adults with six large cases still work in a Crysta, but only with a roof carrier. Seven or more adults should move to a Tempo Traveller or Urbania. Children in car seats change the calculation, because a child seat takes the full width of a middle captain seat.
Between the two Innovas, our usual advice is this: if your tour is mostly on major highways and you value a quiet ride, choose the Hycross. If your itinerary includes rural Rajasthan, hill stations, rough fort approaches or long distances on mixed roads, choose the Crysta. Both are excellent, and both are part of our fleet at Heritage India Private Tours, so we can match the vehicle to your route.
Real numbers help more than per-km rates, so here are two sample costs based on typical itineraries. A Golden Triangle tour by Innova Crysta over six days, starting and ending in Delhi, usually covers Delhi city, Delhi to Agra, Agra sightseeing with Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur, Jaipur sightseeing and the return to Delhi. The total distance is around 1,000 to 1,100 km, but the daily minimum of 250 km over six days means billing is based on 1,500 km. At INR 22 to 24 per km, the kilometre charge comes to INR 33,000 to 36,000.
To that, add five nights of driver allowance at INR 500 to 600, so INR 2,500 to 3,000; tolls of around INR 2,500 to 3,500; state permits for Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan of INR 2,500 to 4,000; and parking of about INR 1,000 to 1,500. The total Golden Triangle Innova Crysta cost for six days is therefore roughly INR 42,000 to 48,000 (about USD 506 to 578). Split between five travellers, that is under USD 120 per person for the vehicle and driver for the whole trip. Monument tickets, guide fees and hotels are separate.
A 12-day Rajasthan tour by Innova Crysta is a bigger trip, typically Delhi, Mandawa, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ranakpur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Jaipur, Agra and back to Delhi. The actual distance is usually 2,600 to 2,900 km, which falls below the 12-day minimum of 3,000 km at 250 km a day unless you add detours, so billing is likely to be based on the 3,000 km minimum. At INR 22 to 24 per km, that is INR 66,000 to 72,000. Add eleven nights of driver allowance at INR 500 to 600, roughly INR 5,500 to 6,600; tolls of INR 4,500 to 6,000; permits for Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh of INR 3,000 to 5,000; and parking of INR 2,000 to 3,000.
The total for a 12-day Rajasthan Crysta tour therefore comes to about INR 81,000 to 93,000 (about USD 976 to 1,120). For a family of four or five, this works out well below the cost of internal flights plus local taxis, and you have the same driver and vehicle from the first day to the last. If you choose a Hycross instead, add 10 to 15 percent; for a Tempo Traveller, the total rises to roughly INR 1,25,000 to 1,45,000.
These figures assume a Delhi start and finish. If you begin in Jaipur, the positioning cost from Delhi disappears, which can lower the total. They also assume mostly daytime driving. If your schedule includes early sunrise starts, late dinners or night arrivals, budget a few thousand rupees extra for night charges. We always share a day-by-day distance sheet with our quote, so you can see exactly how the kilometres add up.
Not every Crysta on the road is the same, and a few simple questions at the booking stage save a lot of trouble later. First, ask for the Innova Crysta model year. A car that is one to three years old will have better seats, cleaner upholstery, working rear AC vents and fewer mechanical issues than one that has done several hundred thousand kilometres. Some budget operators send much older vehicles while advertising a new one, so ask for a photo of the actual car, including the registration plate, before you pay the advance.
Second, confirm the air conditioning works in all three rows. In the summer months, a weak rear AC makes the back seats very uncomfortable on long afternoons. Third, if you have more than four large suitcases, ask whether the vehicle has a roof carrier with a waterproof cover and lockable straps. Fourth, check the seating layout: insist on the 6+1 captain seat version if you have adults in the middle row. Fifth, ask whether seat belts are fitted and working in all rows, which is not always the case in older vehicles.
The driver matters as much as the car. Ask whether the driver speaks English, and to what level. Most experienced tour drivers speak enough English for directions, timings and simple conversation, but they are not licensed guides, and by law they cannot guide inside monuments. A good driver is calm on highways, knows clean places to stop for meals and restrooms, and will suggest timings to avoid crowds. Our founder Magan Singh has more than 27 years of driving across Rajasthan and North India, and our drivers follow the same standards.
Also ask what is included in the quote. A good written quote for an Innova Crysta with driver should list the per-km rate, daily minimum, driver allowance, tolls, permits, parking, night charges and taxes, and state clearly whether each is included or excluded. Monument tickets, guide fees, meals and hotels are almost always excluded. Avoid quotes that only show a single figure without a breakdown, because extras tend to appear later.

The Crysta seats six guests plus the driver in the 6+1 captain seat layout. For long tours with large suitcases, four to five adults is the comfortable limit. Six adults with six large cases can travel only if the car has a roof carrier. Above that, a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania is the better choice for comfort.
Expect INR 20 to 24 per km (about USD 0.24 to 0.29) in Rajasthan and North India, with Delhi and Mumbai sometimes slightly higher. There is usually a daily minimum of 250 to 300 km. Driver allowance, tolls, state permits, parking and night charges are added separately unless your quote clearly states they are included.
Driver allowance is usually INR 400 to 600 per night when the driver stays away from his base city. It covers his meals and lodging. Most Rajasthan hotels offer basic driver rooms, but some luxury properties do not, and in that case a small extra charge may apply for the driver's accommodation that night.
The standard city package is 8 hours and 80 km. In Jaipur, Agra and Udaipur, budget INR 3,500 to 4,500 (about USD 42 to 54), and in Delhi or Mumbai INR 4,000 to 5,000. Extra hours cost INR 300 to 400 each, and extra kilometres INR 20 to 24 each. Half-day 4-hour packages are also available.
Yes, when the car crosses state borders. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi each charge tourist permit fees, usually INR 500 to 2,500 per state for a Crysta depending on the days. A Golden Triangle tour needs two or three permits. Your quote should state whether permits are included or charged at actual cost.
Choose the Hycross for a quieter, smoother ride on good highways and in cities, and for slightly roomier captain seats. Choose the Crysta for rural roads, hill routes and rough fort approaches, where its diesel engine and rugged build work better. The Hycross usually costs 10 to 15 percent more per kilometre than the Crysta.
Only for small groups with light luggage. The Ertiga is advertised as a 7-seater, but realistically it carries four adults with bags, and its third row and boot are tight. It costs about INR 14 to 17 per km. For families with large international suitcases on long tours, the Crysta is far more comfortable and practical.
A six-day Delhi, Agra and Jaipur round trip is usually billed on 1,500 km because of the daily minimum. With driver allowance, tolls, permits and parking, the total is about INR 42,000 to 48,000 (about USD 506 to 578). Monument tickets, guide fees, meals and hotels are not included in this vehicle cost.
Ask for the model year and a photo of the actual car, confirm working AC in all three rows, check for a roof carrier with a waterproof cover, and insist on the 6+1 captain seat layout. Also ask about the driver's English level and get a written quote that lists every charge separately, including taxes.
Send your dates, start and end cities, number of guests, suitcases and rough route on WhatsApp at +91 9799397401 or through our website enquiry form. We reply with a written quote and a day-wise distance sheet. A 20 to 25 percent advance confirms the car, and the balance can be paid during your tour.
