Last winter, a retired couple from Ohio sent us three quotes they had collected for a twelve-day trip through Rajasthan. One said INR 38,000, another said INR 61,000, and the third simply read "USD 45 per day, all inclusive." All three were for the same route, in roughly the same type of car. Their question was simple: which one is real? The honest answer is that all three could be real, because the cost to hire a car and driver in India depends on how the price is built, not just on the final number. Some quotes leave out tolls and state permits. Some count fewer kilometres than you will actually drive. Some assume an older car with a driver who speaks very little English.
This guide breaks down what a private car and driver in India really costs today, from the per kilometre rate and daily minimums to driver allowance, tolls, parking and tips. You will also find sample costs for common routes such as the Golden Triangle and a two-week Rajasthan circuit, so you can judge any quote with confidence before you pay a single rupee.
Almost every operator in India prices outstation tours on a per km rate, with a minimum daily distance. The industry standard is 250 kilometres per day. If your car is booked for ten days, you will be billed for at least 2,500 kilometres, even if a few days are spent mostly in one city. This rule exists because the car and driver are committed to you for the whole day and cannot take other work. On a busy route day, such as Agra to Jaipur with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, you may cover 260 to 280 kilometres, so the extra distance is added on top of the minimum.
The second factor is the vehicle itself. A compact sedan such as a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios is the most affordable option and works well for two travellers with medium suitcases. A Maruti Ciaz offers noticeably more legroom and boot space. Families and groups of four usually move to a Toyota Innova Crysta or Innova Hycross, which are the most trusted touring vehicles on Indian highways. Larger groups need a Tempo Traveller or a Force Urbania, and the price rises sharply with each step up.
Season matters more than most travellers expect. October to March is peak season across North India, and rates for the last two weeks of December and the first week of January are the highest of the year, often 15 to 25 percent above normal. From April to September, many operators reduce their rates, although summer heat in Rajasthan and monsoon rain make long drives less comfortable.
The driver also shapes the cost. An experienced chauffeur who speaks good English, knows heritage hotels and monuments, and has driven foreign guests for years will cost more than a local taxi driver hired at random. That difference shows up quickly on the road: safer driving on two-lane highways, sensible rest stops, honest advice about markets and restaurants, and far less stress for you.
Finally, the shape of the route affects the price. A round trip that starts and ends in Delhi is the most economical. A one-way trip, such as Delhi to Udaipur with a flight home, usually includes a return charge because the car must drive back empty. A one-way surcharge of INR 5,000 to INR 12,000 is common on longer routes. Ask any operator to show it clearly in the quote from the start, rather than finding it added at the end.
The table below shows realistic rates for a chauffeur driven car in India on outstation tours for the 2026-27 season. These figures sit on the higher side of the market. They reflect newer vehicles, experienced English-speaking drivers and well-maintained cars rather than the cheapest options available. Daily costs are based on the standard 250 kilometre minimum and include the driver allowance, but exclude tolls, parking and state permits.

For city sightseeing, most operators use a local package of 8 hours and 80 kilometres. A sedan for a full day in Delhi or Jaipur costs about INR 2,800 to INR 3,600, an Innova Crysta about INR 3,800 to INR 4,800, and a Tempo Traveller around INR 5,500 to INR 7,000. Extra hours are billed at INR 250 to INR 450 per hour, and extra kilometres at the vehicle's per km rate.
For two travellers, a sedan is perfectly fine on the Golden Triangle. A Ciaz or an Innova Crysta is worth the upgrade on longer Rajasthan tours, where you may spend five or six hours in the car on certain days. The Innova sits higher, handles rough village roads better and gives far more room for luggage and shopping collected along the way. Many couples on two- and three-week tours choose it for that reason alone, even though it costs roughly INR 1,500 more per day.
Groups of six to twelve should look at a Tempo Traveller hire, which offers push-back seats, overhead racks and enough space for everyone's bags. The Force Urbania is the newer premium alternative, with a smoother ride, stronger air conditioning and a quieter cabin. It is popular with wedding groups, extended families and friends travelling together.
Luxury cars such as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or BMW 5 Series are available in Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Udaipur, but mostly for city use, airport transfers and short drives. Few operators send them on long multi-day routes, because spare parts and servicing are limited outside major cities.
When you compare quotes, always check the car model and its age. A quote for an "SUV" could mean a new Innova Hycross or a ten-year-old vehicle with worn seats. A good operator will name the exact model, confirm it is no older than three or four years, and state whether the price covers the driver's food and accommodation. It is also fair to ask for a photo of the actual car before you pay the advance, since a reliable company will happily share one along with the driver's name.
The per km rate covers fuel, the car and the driver's salary, but a fair India car hire cost also includes several smaller charges. These are where most surprises appear, so it helps to know them before you sign anything.
Driver allowance is a fixed daily amount that covers the driver's meals and personal expenses while away from home. On outstation tours it ranges from INR 400 to INR 700 per night. Most heritage and business hotels in Rajasthan and Agra have separate driver rooms or dormitories, so you will not need to pay for a hotel room for your driver. In a few remote places, including some desert camps near Jaisalmer and boutique stays in small villages, the driver may need a nearby guesthouse, and a good operator includes this in the quote.
Tolls on Indian highways are paid electronically. Delhi to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway costs roughly INR 450 to INR 550 in tolls one way for a car, while Delhi to Jaipur runs about INR 600 to INR 800 each way. On a full Golden Triangle circuit, expect INR 2,000 to INR 3,000 in total tolls for a sedan, and around 60 percent more for a Tempo Traveller.
State permits, sometimes called interstate taxes, apply when a tourist vehicle crosses state borders. A Delhi-registered car entering Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan pays anywhere from a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees per state, depending on vehicle size and permit validity. For a sedan, budget INR 1,000 to INR 2,500 for the Golden Triangle. For a Tempo Traveller on a long Rajasthan route, permits can reach INR 6,000 to INR 10,000.
Parking costs INR 50 to INR 300 per stop at monuments, markets and railway stations. At the Taj Mahal, private cars cannot go near the gates, so you will take an electric shuttle from the parking area to the entrance.
Night driving charges of INR 300 to INR 500 may apply if the car runs after 10 PM, which is common with late flight arrivals into Delhi. Most operators also add 5 percent GST on car rental with a driver, so ask whether the price you see is inclusive or exclusive of tax.
Tipping is never part of a quote and is entirely your choice, but it is expected for good service. Many guests give INR 500 to INR 1,000 per day to the driver, usually handed over at the end of the tour, and INR 500 to INR 1,000 to a local guide after a half-day tour. On a two-week trip with an excellent driver, a total tip of INR 8,000 to INR 12,000 is common and genuinely appreciated.
Numbers make more sense when they are attached to a real route. The figures below are based on the 250 kilometre daily minimum, higher-side per km rates, driver allowance, tolls, permits and parking. They cover the car and driver only, not hotels, guides or monument tickets.
Golden Triangle by car: 6 days, Delhi – Agra – Jaipur – Delhi
The classic circuit covers roughly 1,000 to 1,100 kilometres of actual driving, but billing follows the 1,500 kilometre minimum for six days. Delhi to Agra takes about three and a half to four hours on the Yamuna Expressway. Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri takes five to six hours including the stop. Jaipur back to Delhi takes five to six hours, depending on traffic at the Delhi border.

A quick way to check any quote is to divide the total by the number of days. For a sedan in peak season, an all-inclusive daily figure between INR 4,500 and INR 5,500 is reasonable. For an Innova Crysta, INR 6,000 to INR 7,000 per day is fair. A quote far below these ranges usually means something is missing: tolls, permits, a newer car, or a driver who earns his real income from shopping commissions. A quote far above them should come with something extra, such as a brand-new vehicle, a senior chauffeur or a luxury model.
Keep in mind that the car is only one part of the total budget. Hotels, guides, monument tickets and meals usually make up 60 to 70 percent of the cost of a private India tour, while the car and driver account for the remaining 30 to 40 percent. Choosing a better car rarely changes the overall cost as much as travellers fear, yet it changes the daily comfort more than almost anything else. On a fourteen-day tour, the gap between a basic sedan and an Innova is often less than the price of two nights in a good hotel, while the extra space is felt on every single drive.
An honest price starts with clear information. Share your travel dates, the cities you wish to see, the number of travellers and the amount of luggage. Mention any must-have stops, such as sunrise at the Taj Mahal or a night in a desert camp, because these change the daily distance and the timings.
When a quote arrives, check five things. First, ask whether tolls, parking, state permits, driver allowance and GST are included. Next, ask for the exact car model and its registration year. Ask whether the driver speaks English well enough to hold a conversation, not just give directions. Ask how extra kilometres and extra hours are charged. Finally, confirm the payment terms. Reputable companies usually take an advance of 20 to 30 percent to confirm the booking and collect the balance during or at the end of the tour.
Be careful with very low prices offered through random websites or at airport counters. Cheap tours often depend on shopping stops where the driver earns a commission on carpets, gems and textiles you never asked to see. That model costs far more in lost time and pressure than a fair daily rate ever would. Reviews on TripAdvisor and Trustpilot, especially those that mention the driver by name, are one of the best signs that a company treats its guests well.

Send your dates and route through the enquiry form, call +91-9799397401, or message us on WhatsApp. You will receive a detailed quote with the car model, total kilometres and every charge listed clearly, usually within 24 hours. If you already have quotes from other companies, share them as well, and we will explain line by line where the differences come from
A sedan costs about INR 3,800 to INR 4,800 per day including driver allowance, or INR 4,500 to INR 5,500 per day once tolls, permits and parking are added. An Innova Crysta costs roughly INR 6,000 to INR 7,000 per day all-inclusive.
With most reputable operators, yes. The driver allowance covers meals, and hotels provide driver rooms. Always confirm this in writing, especially for desert camps and small village stays.
Yes. On outstation tours, the 250 kilometre daily minimum applies every day the car is booked, because the car and driver remain with you and cannot take other work.
It depends on the operator. Some quote only the per km rate and add tolls, permits and parking later. Ask for an all-inclusive price to avoid surprises.
INR 500 to INR 1,000 per day is a fair range for good service. It is usually given as one amount at the end of the tour.
A Maruti Ciaz works well for shorter tours. For tours longer than ten days, an Innova Crysta or Innova Hycross offers far more comfort and luggage space for a modest extra cost.
Yes, but expect a return charge, because the car must drive back to its base. On routes such as Delhi to Udaipur, this can add INR 5,000 to INR 12,000.
Yes, when you book through an established company with verified reviews, licensed drivers and commercially registered vehicles. Avoid unregistered cars offered at airports or on the street.
For October to March, book four to eight weeks ahead. For the Christmas and New Year period, two to three months ahead is safer, as good drivers and newer vehicles fill up quickly.
Most companies take a 20 to 30 percent advance by bank transfer or card, with the balance paid in cash or by transfer during or at the end of the tour.
