Itinerary

Your journey begins in Chennai, the cultural heart of Tamil Nadu. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel for rest and refreshment. Later, embark on a city orientation tour visiting Marina Beach, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the colonial landmarks of Fort St. George.

Evening leisure time can be spent walking along Chennai’s vibrant streets or savoring authentic South Indian dishes like dosa and filter coffee. The first day sets the rhythm of the tour — a harmony of modern pace and ancient grace.

After breakfast, travel along the scenic East Coast Road to Pondicherry, a journey of coastal beauty and calm. Upon arrival, check into your elegant heritage hotel set in the French Quarter.

Later, stroll through cobblestoned lanes lined with mustard-colored colonial villas. Visit the Aurobindo Ashram, Sacred Heart Basilica, and the peaceful Promenade Beach. In the evening, the French cafés come alive with music and the aroma of freshly baked baguettes — a perfect blend of European and Tamil cultures.

Today’s morning visit takes you to Auroville, an experimental township devoted to peace and human unity. The golden-globed Matrimandir stands as the spiritual core of the community. Visitors can walk through its lush green environment that promotes sustainability and silence.

Return to Pondicherry for a guided Tamil Quarter heritage walk. Discover centuries-old houses, vibrant street markets, and the city’s transformation from a French colony to a cultural haven. The day ends with leisure time by the seaside promenade, watching the waves meet the colonial horizon.

Depart Pondicherry and drive toward Thanjavur, once the seat of the great Chola Empire. The route is dotted with villages where traditional potters and silk weavers continue ancient crafts.

On arrival, visit the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its colossal Shiva Lingam and intricate Chola carvings. Later, explore the Royal Palace, Art Gallery, and Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of Asia’s oldest. The evening brings classical music and lamp-lit rituals — a pure taste of South Indian devotion.

After breakfast, travel toward Chettinad, a region celebrated for its unique architecture and legendary cuisine. The roads wind through rural Tamil Nadu, showcasing paddy fields and traditional bullock carts.

On arrival, check into a restored Chettiar mansion — a living museum of marble courtyards and Burmese teak. Spend your afternoon exploring antique markets, heritage homes, and tile workshops. Dinner will feature authentic Chettinad cuisine, known for its bold spices and aromatic gravies. This is heritage you can taste.

Continue the journey to Madurai, Tamil Nadu’s oldest living city and a vibrant example of Dravidian culture. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and rest.

In the evening, witness the sacred Aarti ceremony at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India’s most mesmerizing spiritual spectacles. The sound of conches, drums, and chants fills the air as devotees gather under the temple’s thousand-pillar hall — an architectural wonder in itself.

Begin the day with a guided temple walk through Meenakshi Amman Temple, admiring its towering gopurams covered with mythological sculptures. Visit Thirumalai Nayak Palace, a fusion of Indo-Saracenic architecture, and the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which showcases India’s independence journey.

Afternoon leisure allows for an authentic market visit — where colorful jasmine garlands, brass lamps, and silk sarees define Madurai’s cultural identity. Evening dinner can be enjoyed at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the illuminated temple towers.

After breakfast, the tour continues toward Thekkady, located in Kerala’s Idukki district, known for its scenic hills and wildlife. The drive passes through cardamom plantations and lush forests. Upon arrival, check into your resort surrounded by aromatic spice gardens.

Spend the evening on a leisurely walk through a spice plantation, guided by local farmers who explain the cultivation of pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Later, you can attend a Kathakali dance performance or a traditional martial art show (Kalaripayattu) to witness Kerala’s artistic heritage.

Begin your morning with a nature walk inside Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India’s most beautiful reserves. Keep your camera ready as you may spot elephants, sambar deer, or colorful Malabar giant squirrels amidst the greenery.

Afterward, enjoy a boat safari on Periyar Lake, gliding across calm waters while spotting wildlife on the banks. The afternoon is ideal for visiting local markets selling organic spices and handmade crafts. End your day with a peaceful dinner under starlit skies, surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

After breakfast, leave the hills behind and head toward Alleppey, often called the Venice of the East. On arrival, board your private houseboat, a traditional kettuvallam designed for comfort and relaxation.

As the houseboat glides along narrow canals lined with coconut palms, watch everyday life unfold — fishermen casting nets, children waving from banks, and women washing clothes along the backwaters. Enjoy freshly cooked Kerala meals on board, and spend the night gently drifting under a moonlit sky.

Wake up to the soft rhythm of water and the distant call of birds. After breakfast, the houseboat anchors near small villages where you can walk or cycle through paddy fields and visit local coir-making units.

Interact with villagers to understand their simple yet fulfilling way of life. Afternoon tea is served on the deck as the sun paints the water golden. The serenity of Alleppey backwaters makes this day one of the most memorable moments of the journey.

Disembark from your houseboat and drive to Cochin (Kochi), Kerala’s cultural port city. Check into your hotel and relax. Later, step out for an evening stroll at Marine Drive or enjoy a seaside dinner at one of Fort Kochi’s charming cafés.

The blend of Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Arab influences makes Cochin a living museum of global connections. You’ll immediately feel the charm of this city where history and modernity walk hand in hand.

Begin your day in Fort Kochi, visiting iconic landmarks such as St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica, and the famous Chinese Fishing Nets. Walk through narrow lanes filled with antique shops and vibrant street art.

Afternoon visits include the Dutch Palace and Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry, both testaments to Cochin’s multicultural past. In the evening, witness a sunset cruise over the harbor, where silhouettes of ships and fishing boats create postcard-perfect views.

Today is free for personalized experiences. You can shop for spices, handmade soaps, or souvenirs at Broadway Market, or visit a traditional Kerala home for a cooking demonstration.

Later, attend a performance at the Kerala Folklore Museum showcasing classical instruments, costumes, and art forms. The day concludes with a farewell dinner celebrating your journey through Tamil Nadu and Kerala’s living heritage.

After breakfast, transfer to Cochin International Airport for your onward flight. Carry with you the fragrance of cardamom, the rhythm of temple bells, and countless memories from your Classic and Heritage South India Tour — a journey that connects culture, faith, and the timeless spirit of southern India.

A tour of South India
We are recently back from a fine 10 day tour of South India – Goa, Kochi, the Kerala backwaters, a spice farm in the Western Ghats, the Madurai temples, and last but not least the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. All done with class, excellent drivers (especially Mr. Jai Ram in Kerala) and tour guides. Organized by Magan Singh, Heritage India Private Tours. Perhaps a bit pricey but highly recommended for those who have the resources to invest in a guaranteed high quality experience with no inconveniences/surprises. The hotels were fantastic, especially the Taj in Mumbai (the tour of the hotel was fascinating).  ...Read More

Sit back & enjoy- everything is well organised
We are back from another amazing tour organised by the ever reliable Magan Singh. This was our 4th trip with Magan and again he didn't disappoint. This time we had an incredible time travelling north & spending time around Leh. We also enjoyed some travel through Bahu, Dalhousie, Alsisar, Khandela and Patan. Again the hotel stays were excellent, the vehicle was reliable, comfortable and well maintained. Our conversations & learning were excellent. Nothing is too much trouble for Magan and he is a great host & promoter of Indian tourism  ...Read More

Wonderful experience, thank you Heritage India Private Tours!
We have just completed a 19 day trip - Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur, Narlai, Jodhpur, Mandawa - and it has been a wonderful experience. Magan was excellent helping us plan the right itinerary for a family of 3, including our 12 year old daughter. His communication was always timely. And then the experience itself has been wonderful. So much of the “real India” to learn about and was shared with us. Each destination was well organised, our hotels were beautiful and staff welcoming. Magan was flexible where we needed to alter along the way - we would discuss each days plans and he helped us find the right plans for that day. He was always available if we needed him. We will definitely be returning for another itinerary and experience as soon as we can. Thank you so much Magan!  ...Read More

Magic Magan
This was my first tour with Maganbhai but my family’s second tour with his company. We spent two weeks touring Himachal Pradesh and Maganbhai is a consummate professional. As we started our planning, kicked into action with very detailed and family specific questions so that he could tailor the tour to our individual and collective requirements. Maganbhai made some excellent and knowledgeable recommendations and at every location we were given a choice of quality heritage hotels to pick from. As we were travelling as a group, we were given a top range minibus and our driver, Sahil, was very professional and took great care, especially on mountain roads. During our carefully planned tour Maganbhai shared with us his incredible knowledge of each location and historical significance. At each destination, our hotel / guest in check in was very smooth and quick and our rooms were always ready. Throughout each day, Maganbhai was always available for any requirement we had and also to answer all questions. His priority throughout was to ensure that everyone had a fantastic time. Even after we finished our tour but remained in country Maganbhai generously offered to be available for all family members for any issues we might have. PHT is a top end tour company led by a highly professional tour operator, offering value for money. I wholeheartedly recommend using PHT for Maganbhai to fully cater for your next trip to India.  ...Read More

Fantastic short trip in North India with group of friends
We had an amazing trip with Heritage India Private Tours, headed by Maghan! We were a group of 8 friends from Belgium going to Rishikesh for the wedding of a mutual friend. We only had 7 days to travel North India before the wedding festivities and Heritage Tours made sure that we could complete our busy itinerary carefree. Our driver Satnayaran was an excellent driver and a funny and helpful guide on our trip. He helped us with restaurant recommendations (the food court in Jaipur!!!), tips to travel safely and to buy local gifts, certainly in his hometown of Jaipur. We visited Jodpur, Pushkar (thank you to our local guide Manoj), Jaipur (with Rajesh Parasar as an excellent guide for the fort and old city center), and the Taj Mahal in Agra with Mohammed Tariq who took the besttttt instagram pictures. Finally, Maghan was available at every hour of the day to answer questions and to give us tips to navigate India.  ...Read More
